  I think the first two posters missed the article… young people are voting for Obama, not Paul. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Ron Paul fan, but at this point our (young people) votes are best placed with Obama.

  The senses of smell and taste are our own built-in chemistry set. With relatively no particles in space, you’d think that the air would taste LESS metallic than our planet with so many different forms of minerals on it. I suspect it’s due to him smelling the suit and from them being in contact with the previously heated spacecraft; if there is NOTHING else for them to smell, then a metal would quite a distinct flavour.

  This sucks. I bought an HD-A2 just for netflix rentals. Oh well, I needed an upscaling DVD player anyway.

  Glad to see things are moving this way - maybe there will be relatively cheap Blu-Ray disc burners in the near future. High def movies are all well and good, but what I really want is to be able to archive 25-50gb per disc at an affordable price.

  Lame. Any idiot can put a bunch of different technologies together and send it to the ocean (thousands of miles from anywhere that needs the power) so we don’t have to put them in our back yard. The reality is that with the narrow band they project this to be viable, that means only the equatorial coastal regions will benefit.
  If they had put an ounce of thought into it, they’d find that they could cut the cost to 1/10th of what they’re suggesting (based on the costs of those technologies now) and just use 1) tidal - they have a large floating platform anchored to the sea floor which is perfect whereas waves are minimal in deep water 2) massive tightly packed arrays of wind turbines which don’t individually turn but require the island to turn, 3) concentrated solar thermal electric - which is 1/2 or less the cost of PV and twice to 3 times the efficiency 4) massive tethered wind arrays at up to 35,000 ft altitude which are expected to run 95% of the time and gather power at up to 300 mph, and 5) algae ponds to generate hydrogen and/or any of the synthetic forms of bio-whatever you want. All in all, this island could make so many times what these guys are suggesting and for so much less. …but all someone has to do is say it’s green and people jump all over it. I get tired of people that don’t go looking for what’s out there and them come here and say this is great.
  OTEC, btw has a maximum efficiency of (1 - cold / hot) so that’s 1 - 278/308 or 9.7%. Big whoop.

  We don’t know what will happen once we start taking this energy from environmental processes, the law of conservation of energy is our stumbling block in these situations. I believe the best thing to do is harness solar power only since it is abundant enough that the minute removal of it from the environment would have little to no impact. However, the problem with this is the technological limitation, photovoltaic conversions are inefficient nowadays, but necessity is the mother of invention and hopefully one day it will be better.
