How to fake HDR….
That is not HDR. HDR is high dynamic range not high saturation bumped colors artsy photo. HDR is the delicate merging the details of very bright and very dark areas of the photo to more accurately represent what the human eye sess.
Can we please give that normal HDR people are “used” to a different name. How about GUTM. Gross Use of Tonal Mapping. or just call it tonal mapping.

There’s already a filesystem for Linux that achieves this. It has been available for a very long time. Duplication of effort?

Should also consider the amount of time that Apple released Leopard as a Developer Preview, prior to going public. Preview editions of 10.5 were in circulation for most of a year prior to the public release, so those working on “Flyback” could have a decent idea of what was coming down the pike.

Personally, I’m really looking forward to Flyback. I’m tired of doing something stupid, killing my Ubuntu installation and having to start over.

I am utterly amazed Time Machine was cloned so quickly.

Free and Open source software has just been developing at an amazing rate lately! I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted, because it’s true. Linux users and programmers need to concentrate on building their own killer apps, not creating half-assed versions of things that Apple or MS have already done.

Not as true as you’d like to think. While people have come to treat drivers’ licenses as ID, they really are just a document that indicates that the carrier has passed a driving test. The systems set up around producing a driver’s license provide some security, but there’s a good reason that when you go to get a passport, you can’t just produce a driver’s license, but have to produce some additional “origination” documents, like a birth certificate, etc.

When you get more than one state’s residents going through this mess, it’s pretty obvious that it is not the state making the problem. DHS thought to mandate this and slip through their hearts desire without cost consideration. The Feds have been doing this so long while cutting state budget aid, the states have to draw the line somewhere. Mandating without funding doesn’t bring it about in reality any more than Bush signing a paper saying it’s ok to hire two times the amount of border guards but neglecting the funding to pay for salary, equipment, and personnel support. Looks good on paper that there are two times the slots for guards but the with the costs coming out of everyone elses pocket means it ain’t gonna happen in a cash strapped enviroment.

This would mean more if it was Hannah Montana.

As with any art those who understand the fundamental building blocks will be vastly superior to anyone who comes later in the game. Parents who think their myspace surfing kids are internet savvy probably watch them microwave a bowl of ravioli and then say “oh wow, he can cook too!”

If I had a nickle for every parent who thought their kid was a computer whiz when all that kid was good at was web surfing and playing games, I’d be eating nickle soup.

Funniest case. This was in ‘99. We went onsite to install a network. We configured all the servers and routers and such at the shop so when you got on site ideally you plug it all in and you’re done (haha). So we boot up the server and it’s all wrong. The OS is there and some other stuff but nothing is configured right and stuff is missing. Turns out the owners kid had decided to have fun with the new server between the time it arrived and the week later when we showed up to set it up. He had unboxed it, plugged it in (no big deal really), then he proceeded to grab the box of CD’s and start reloading everything……

I thought my team lead was gonna punch this kid in the mouth. Seriously. That added a day to our trip getting that straightened out that the owner of the agency had to pay for.

You used to have struggle to figure out how to get anything to work on the computer. What was that command you were supposed to type at the prompt? Why won’t … work?

Since the advent of Google, you can just search for the answer to any computer problem. Furthermore, rather than figuring out how things work, you can endlessly surf the internet. There are so many things you can do on the computer, there is less motivation to actually figure out certain things.

Suddenly the quaint old gold standard, hated by politicians and their banking cronies because they can’t create gold out of nothing, is looking very good. Non-fractional reserve banking based on the gold standard will return America to a real wealth-creating engine. The transition might be rough but if we stay true to gold we will emerge stronger with all our freedoms intact.

This article is inaccurate and eliminating progressive tax rates from the economy would have horrible effects. For one a progressive tax is an automatic stabilizer that slows spending when the economy is expanding rapidly by taking money out of circulation when wages are high and encouraging more spending when wages are low. A 33% sales tax will disproportionately affect poor people. Especially ones like me who are in college and earn less than $5000 a year. Inflation is inevitable and considering the price of oil and food which has risen throughout the world, inflation in the U.S. is low. Without those two commodities, it stands around 2%. However, I am all for privatizing Social Security. it is more amazing than it seems -
dolphins live in a world of sound - in the water they can feel or hear (same things really for them) the rings - they are actually playing those rings ( they are vibrating at different frequencies) - so they are creating a frequency with the ring and physically manipulating it - like you would do with an advanced musical instrument - at least this is what the newest researchers think ( we simply aren’t sure yet - guess we are not smart enough). So in this way they have much over us. By the way with their sonar ( seeing and hearing begin to merge too) - they have tested where dolphins/belugas can distinguish between small steel balls thrown in the tank of the exact same outer size but with a slight different inner size or volume. They then have the ability to see inside things via seeing/hearing. Something we don’t even fully understand. Lastly they do all these things with such joy and grace.

This list makes driving a car suck, im claiming ignorance and if my car breaks fuck it, cause I had my fun and ill fix it myself

Here, I’ll condense this entire site into one step: Don’t have fun.

my car’s manual explicitly mention there is no break-in period necessary. No special ‘care’ required at all.

This is all a bullshit list. The common theme is “make your car last longer by driving how I tell you, instead of doing the maintenance that will ensure your car lasts as long as it can.” I hate to make a long post, but let’s examine some of these “tips.”

Easy break-in: Probably sounds good inside your head, but in reality, the piston rings need pressure to seat properly before wearing into the cylinder walls. It just doesn’t make any sense not to put the engine under load when breaking it in. Engine builders typically put their engines on a dyno which gives a full range of tests for engines they’ve just built… what does that tell you about proper break-in?

Don’t allow the car to idle: Cars are designed to idle. If you live in the city, your driving is probably a vast majority of idling. What you do want to do, however, is minimize the operation of things like the clutch pedal that place a load on engine parts that need critical oiling, as the oil pressure could be too low to allow proper lubrication. This is utterly exacerbated by the fact that most manual transmission cars require you to disengage the clutch to start them… when the engine has NO lubrication at all! The manufacturers are providing protection against stupidity over longevity, so if you can disable the clutch pedal start-up requirement (usually it’s a switch that activates at the bottom of the pedal’s travel), it’s a good idea.

Keep the rpms low: This suggestion only makes sense if revving the engine is going to cause you to break the speed limits. The author needs to pick a piece of advice and stick to it: Keep the revs low, but don’t idle! Cars that still use mechanical water pumps are going to benefit not only from increased oiling, but also increased cooling at high rpms.

Do not race the engine during start-up: Sure, but giving the engine a few revs can help the oil heat up faster and actually reduce engine wear. Wear during warm-up is a significant portion of an engine’s wear, but that’s because most people never bother to let their car warm up before driving it. Driving a car and idling/revving are two entirely different things. A couple thousand rpm aren’t going to make much difference to the engine when there is no load on it. Mazda even did this with the RX-7’s cold-start system which revved the engine to 3000 rpm while cold to decrease warm-up times. The reason? Oiling is super-critical on a rotary and Mazda didn’t want their customers putting load on the engine before it was warm. Cold oil = bad lubrication.

Accelerate slowly: Again, the reason wear is typically so high is because people don’t allow the engine to warm up. Engine wear is not dependent upon arbitrary time requirements; once the engine is warmed up, you are free to drive the piss out of it. The very next tip even suggest NOT to let the engine warm up! What the HELL?

Shift to neutral at stop lights: Utterly pointless. If you know anything about automatic transmissions, then you’ll know they include something called a “torque converter” which has a “stall” feature that is designed specifically for the purpose of allowing you to not have to shift the transmission. After all, if you want to shift, then get a manual. That’s the ENTIRE POINT of an automatic.

Avoid high-speed driving: The frequency of repairs is not determined by how fast you drive the car. It’s how you drive the car. For instance, a person who accelerates quickly might also brake quickly and therefore go through brake pads much quicker. However, someone else who might also accelerate quickly might use engine braking much more frequently, and thus go through *fewer* brake pads than someone who drives slowly. Engine braking is a benefit of manual transmissions. It cools the engine down faster, saves gas (most fuel injectors aren’t operating if engine speed is greater than 1500 rpm or so and throttle input is zero, which is usually not the case for an automatic which is basically idling the whole time as you come to a stop), and saves brake pads.

Extend the life of your tires with careful driving: Sure, but extend the life of them even more by checking your tire pressure and rotating them every so often. Obviously you want to avoid poor road conditions like potholes and obviously driving a car harder will increase tire wear, but the most common reason for increased tire wear is that the average idiot doesn’t bother to have their alignment checked, doesn’t bother to check that their tires are full of air, and doesn’t bother to rotate the tires. A slight bit of toe out on your car’s alignment can cause the inside of the tires to feather and wear faster than anything else. Overinflating or underinflating tires will cause them to wear in the middle of the tread or on the outsides, respectively. Rotating the tires will help get more life out of them because the front wheels tend to wear faster, as they have to both roll and turn. Most of the tires I’ve seen people driving on have to be replaced not because they’ve reached their wear limit, but because the tire wear was so severely abnormal that the tires had to be junked early.

Too bad the question in the title isn’t answered. What really happened?

Trying to hard-code common sense is, frankly, going about the whole thing completely backwards.

The thing to understand is that we’ve already got strong AI in the form of humans and possibly some species of parrots / high primates / certain sea mammals, etc.

Humans don’t need common sense data-bases: we’re rigged with the mechanisms to reverse-derive the starting propositions of our world, and to derive new truths from old ones through a collapsed form of conventional logic “all men are mortal, Socrates is a man, therefore Socrates is mortal”.

A strong AI doesn’t need a database of every conceivable fact - Strong AI needs to be able to learn. More specifically, it need emotions.

Nothing, certainly, as complicated or contradictory as the human emotional set, but at the very least a positive-negative reinforcement system to reward positive behavior / neural connections / evolutionary outputs, depending on which system you’re using.

So, what you need to code a strong AI comes tot his: a logical derivation system, some kind of learning code than can derive the initial assumptions necessary to produce it’s inputs, and an emotional system to reward effective behavior. Being able to learn by example would save a lot of time as well.

If you can write something like this, you’ll have an entity with about the brain power of a mentally-impaired crab. However, if you open it’s code up to it’s own development, then you might have a shot at getting something worthwhile.

He had not been the only K5 regular to commit suicide so there was a good deal of “soul seeking” (if K5ers can be said to have a ’soul’). Anyway, like all community members, he debated points, discussed a range of topics, and occasionally got in to flame wars.

I used to hang out on the discussion boards of joelonsoftware.com….In January of ‘06 Chris McKinstry wrote a suicide note on the forums, I remember reading it and shaking my head, and moving on. Chris had a reputation as an eccentric drug addled member of the forums.

I never had heard of either of these fine gentleman, however like them I too suffer from bipolar disorder among other things however I never was so bright at such a young age. We need more people in our world with such persistence and ability, it is a tragedy that they leave us so young however. I do, however, wonder if Chris’s acid trip had exacerbated his mental conditions.

I only know the SQL i have taught myself, so im hoping someone can give me a little help. Reading the code, it seems to me their SELECT line is odd to me:
$query=”SELECT `quote`, `author` FROM `quotes` ORDER by rand() LIMIT 1″;
It seems a very odd use of ORDER By to me, i would have had an auto incrementing key field, and done a SELECT * WHERE key=rand() type thing.

What do you guys think?

He uses $htmlentities to prevent possible XSS attempts when echoing out database values, but never bothers to sanitize the input in the first place, leaving the whole system wide open for SQL injection. That’s a great way to have your data compromised and/or DROPed.

George is actually quite interesting and has some good guess, soome horrible. He doesnt filter much, but it’s often worth listening.

I’m hoping George finds out it was all fake, then a few weeks later Morgan Freeman calls and he mistakes him for Gordon and chews him out.
