  Seems to me that if there was any “High Dynamic Range” in these images when they were created would be lost once they’re converted to JPEG format. To me, it looks like someone used Photoshop and cranked up the sharpness and saturation, and tweaked the levels a bit.

  A few good selections in here, for sure, but I’ve never heard of half or more of those books or even their authors. If you didn’t have that leading “The,” your post would be fine - I’d take those unfamiliar titles and authors as suggested reading. But with that leading “The” I must protest. I read hundreds of SF and fantasy books in junior high through college (not as many since, but some). No 2001? No Ringworld? You should definitely include Gibson, but his “Neuromancer” (ca. 1984) was the one that “altered the course of science fiction writing”, not his later work. “The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.” How about Hitchhiker’s? Fahrenheit 451? Blade Runner/Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

  Just change the title and get rid of “The” and we’ll all take it as your personal favorites list. Thanks for some new suggestions, though.

  Her Scots accent is the usual rubbish you get from Americans. The English ones sounded pretty convincing to my ear at least.

  The difference between the accents are noticeable, I think that’s what she was aiming to do. Just because she doesn’t sound like you when she says she’s from LA, doesn’t mean that she’s no good. There are people in the west that carry that accent that might not anywhere else in the world, so picking that particular accent from the west coast was alright. Also, there are a lot of variations in accent, so she can’t rightfully nail every one. People in LA have different accepts that people in Bakersfield. People in Bakersfield have different accents than people in Fresno. People in Fresno have different accents than people in San Francisco. I’d imagine it would he difficult to pick just one from California that would stand out.

  Can all the armchair linguists please chill out here? The accents in the video are supposed to evoke a certain locale, not be a dead-on reproduction of how a single person from a single place talks.

  I was able to immediately identify the source of each accent - yes, even the Canadian one. I lived there for many years and I agree the accent is indeed subtle, but it’s still noticeably different from American or British English. It’s amusing what a firestorm was set off among the Canadian diggers though.

  Anyway, to those who are strenuously objecting that nobody in *Toronto* talks like that, may I just suggest that she used that particular city because it’s the most well-known in Canada? If she had said “My name is Amy Walker, and I’m from Corner Brook,” 75% of her international audience would have been mighty perplexed.

  Most of these are horrible for actually storing books.

  My thoughts too. We have around 500 books, or more, and are trying to think of some good ways for storage other than your standard bookshelves. The problem with those is that even though they look cool, they are not very practical.

  Yesterday a new friend saw my bedroom for the first time. The shock and disgust! I couldn’t stop her, she rolled up her sleeves and worked and commanded me in a cleanup and reorganization of my room that lasted for about 40 minutes. But the result! Nothing less than inspirational. Decluttered (mostly), room to move, room to think, room to relax and just be. And Leo’s article is inspirational in just the same way.

  Whenever you see this many good pictures of a mountain lion (cougar) or any other very elusive type animal, you can be sure that the animal in question is a tame animal that was modeling for the pictures. There are “game farms’ where animal owners with tame/domesticated exotic animals charge photographers to take pictures. Not that there’s anything necessarily wrong with that, but it’s not like the photographer stalked a wild animal for days and then the animal playfully jumped from rock to rock, ignoring his presence.

  I am an Obama supporter, yet I don’t hear the “silence” the author of this article suggests was there. On the other hand, I do question some of the responses that were made on the audio–if there are 27 “flagstaff” officers that have officially supported Hillary…how many flagstaff officers are there in total? If there are 100 flagstaff officers in the armed forces–a number that just seems logically small, I would presume to think that there are thousands of flagstaff officers in the military, yet I’ll be the first one to admit my ignorance to the real actual numbers–that would mean that Hillary has 27% of the flagstaff officers supporting her; a number even then seems rather small.

  The entire concept of this article is so flawed. If it applies at all, it only applies to experiences that give you a relatively high level of happiness, and honestly, how many of those things exist in life? If you choose to marry girl B rather than girl A and your marriage turns out to be bad or even just “average” (which given the divorce numbers you probably have at least a 65% chance of it being no better than average), you’re telling me that you’re not going to be thinking about girl A sometimes? … and to apply this to my life… whenever I choose to do something I am constantly thinking about what else I could be doing instead, unless what I am doing gives me a high level of pleasure, and maybe it’s just me, but there aren’t that many things in life which give me such a high level of pleasure.
