  The major problem as I see it is, and the point I think Thom is making at the end is the “valuing the company or the interest of the artists rather than the music itself”.

  If you get a site where there are a list of bands you’ve never heard of with free music for download, and Britney Spears, your average punter or warez/mp3 kiddy is going to go for the recognisable brand name.

  For example, Radiohead announce that they are going to allow you to pay what you want for their album, and it is all over the front page of Digg, and practically every other ezine or publication. If ‘Scubbs Nosebleed’ [fictional unknown group - or as far as I know] announce that they are making their first/latest album available for free download, then who the hell will give a shit?   The music industry screws artists, sure. And the end user too. But all too often the end user screws the artist with their torrented collections, and what the artist makes mostly is from their “brand recognition”.

  With some small exceptions, the music industry and music in general is in decline, but that is as much to do with the listener and their attitudes to music as it is to do with the evils of the record companies.

  So go on, dig me down because you fucked up the quality of music.

  Bleh, Radiohead can bullshit themselves all they want but the only reason they were able to successfully sell their album online is due to a decade of advertising, exposure, and distribution deals paid for by their record company.

  My driver’s ed teacher taught us to drive a few (3-5) miles above the speed limit to keep the flow of traffic going.
  Another good reason to stay sharp behind the wheel, avoid sudden maneuvers and braking, and maintain a consistent speed. The problem with most driver’s ed and motor vehicle departments is that they only teach you how to pass the test, not how to drive.

  The offical Internet Explorer blog reports that the development version 8 currently passes Acid 2 face CSS test!

  I’m not sure it’d be possible to specifically pass ACID2 while failing to have a good CSS2 support, unless you create special cases all over that is. And that would be as much work as actually getting the required CSS2 support.

  At least they’re finally considering web developers in the production of their web browser. It’s a step in the right direction. Towards Firefox. If they keep this up, I expect they’ll be CSS2 complaint well before the 2050 target date.

People will be charged a small fee to be connected to to the power grid, and then every year you either pay your electric bill (if solar didn’t cover all electricity costs) or the electric company cuts you a check for how much energy you produced — for them — that year. If you do it right it would take significantly less time for your panels to pay for themselves and for people to start seeing returns. Booya.

  That’s not a cutter, it is an MLB (Motor Life Boat). Cutters are 65 feet in length or longer, have names and living quarters. MLBs do not have quarters for their crews (although they do have places to sleep, and a small place to warm up food - they are not meant to be living quarters). Interestingly, some MLBs (the 52 footers, I think there are only six of them) are the only CG boats (cutters are considered “ships” v. boats) to have names (that I know of- it’s been 20+ years).

  And no, I was never on an MLB when it rolled - few people have. It isn’t very good for the boat causing thousands of dollars of damage typically - although most of the time the boat and crew survive.
