  these types of things really piss me off. You know what? Even if we were to completely demolish lifeforms, and end humanity through our SUVs, factories and oil spills, the world will keep spinning. Humans are merely a life form that is adapted to the current environment. The planet has changed environments plenty of times, and will do so again, with or without our help. Why do we really care about which life forms will survive on the planet 200 years from now? Dinosaurs eventually went extinct, due to natural changes in the environment. Humans are part of nature. What we do to the environment is a natural by-product of our existence. If we fuck up the world, it’s because we’re flawed animals - just like every other animal on the planet. Why should we have a huge guilt trip over it?

  For those that don’t understand why light pollution is bad:
  1. Its disruptive to nocturnal animals.
  2. A good majority of lights left on overnight are simply that: left on. Therefore they’re just burning up useful energy. Sure, there are some lights that a great to have on all night, as they provide safety for people walking and driving in some areas.
  3. Any light fixture that emits UV radiation and is on at night will alter the circadian rhythms of those exposed to it (yes, they have to be exposed to it for a long time, and no, some people aren’t interested in getting a good night’s sleep).
  4. Astronomers get pissed off.
  5. Amateur astronomers have to increase their carbon footprint by driving somewhere else where they can actually see the night sky.

  No, I’m not qualified to say any of these things, but with even a high school education these things should be pretty evident. Light pollution isn’t going to bring about the Armageddon, but it is a little bit more than just a side effect of industrialization. Thomas Edison was right when he said, “We’ll make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles.” (paraphrased, I don’t remember the exact quote, sue me, etc.) but he didn’t realize that it would be so cheap that electricity would be used even when there wasn’t any need!

  Lastly, its a really cool picture regardless of whether it was a long exposure or Photoshoped or whatever. There is a great contrast of nature and industry and the colors are beautiful.

  Murray Sabrin is a professor of finance at Ramapo College in Mahwah and a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in New Jersey.

  TWO HUNDRED years after the Declaration of Independence was signed, a Republican physician from Texas was chosen by the voters in his district to head to Congress in a special election. Of course, 1976 was a presidential year, and incumbent President Gerald Ford was actively working to shore up support from the Republican Party to earn the party’s nomination for a new term.

  So Ford called this freshman congressman into the Oval Office, congratulated him on his victory in the special election and then asked the young doctor for his support in the Republican presidential primary.

  “I’m sorry, Mr. President,” said the man in 1976, “but I cannot support you. I am backing Ronald Reagan.”

  That courageous man was Ron Paul, and now, 32 years later, he himself is seeking the Republican nomination for president of the United States. And the platform on which Paul is running would make Ronald Reagan proud, because it represents a return to the limited government principles that made the Republican Party great, and can make it successful again.

  Paul calls himself a “champion of the Constitution.” His record in Washington, where his votes against runaway federal government spending have earned him the nickname “Dr. No,” shows that he is more an heir to the legacy of Reagan than any other candidate running for president.

  Quite simply, Paul does not equivocate on the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. He forcefully rejected the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform package, which trampled on our political free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment. He has been one of the most strident advocates of Americans’ Second Amendment gun rights and a steadfast defender of the Fourth Amendment, voting against the depredations of the American people’s privacy by the federal government.

  Paul has also been the most vocal critic in Congress of the Federal Reserve’s “legalized counterfeiting.” Since the creation of the Federal Reserve in 1913, the U.S. dollar has lost more than 90 percent of its purchasing power. And since 1971, when President Nixon ended the last link between the dollar and gold, the U.S. dollar has lost about 80 percent of its value.

  To some, that may sound like complicated economic theory. But it’s actually quite simple. When we live beyond our means as a nation, we must borrow money from others to make ends meet. When we can’t borrow any more, and our government lacks the courage to cut spending, we have no choice but to just print more money.

  Sooner or later, this causes the price of goods to increase, especially imports, and the middle class will be squeezed.

  President Paul will not allow that to happen.

  Paul served this country for five years in the Air Force during the Cold War. So he is strongly attuned to the need for a formidable national defense. That is why he voted in favor of invading Afghanistan in 2001, in the immediate aftermath of Sept. 11, and why he wants all terrorists brought to justice.

  He will never compromise the integrity of America’s borders, and has taken a hard line against illegal immigration, calling for an end to benefits for those who enter this country illegally.

  Paul believes that if we continue to subsidize illegal immigration, we will invariably get more of it.

  So if you miss the principles that made the Republican Party so strong, and you believe that we need a president who will restore the federal government to its constitutional size, then Ron Paul is the only choice.

  He backed Reagan in 1976 because he foresaw the great legacy in advance ? America prospers when government gets out of the way and allows the wealth and talents of the American people to flourish.

  Ron Paul is the only Republican who has recaptured that spirit, and that is why he is our best hope for president.

  Had a geo in high school. They’re actually pretty quick off the line because they’re so light. Even with 3 cylinders and 50 hp. It could do 90MPH like the other guy says. I think I hit 100 once down a big hill.

  while i haven’t used GNOME, I can say that Ktorrent on KDE is a great balance of being lightweight enough without sacrificing features. At the moment, Transmission just doesn’t offer enough encryption and protection features. Also, it has a reputation as being the “fastest” BT client out there, but I think speeds are mostly dependent on user-configured settings and the particular swarm itself… YMMV

  Actually the writers of Lost gave their viewers a pretty big clue to the answer for question number four. I’m kind of surprised that the geniuses over at Cracked didn’t pick up on it. I mean how many times did they go over the fact that people can’t have kids on that island without dying?

  I can proudly say I’ve never watched LOST — not a single episode or a single scene. I just don’t care about the show.Maybe when it all over I’ll check it out, but I’ve been burned too many times by ‘ongoing mysteries’ that never get solved due to a need to drag out a series.

  a group of friends and i took a road trip over the winter break, Lost Season 1 was our cure for boredom, that was last year. Every once in a while one of us will scream at another: “Where the f*** did that polar bear come from?!?”. Crack up everytime. We use it to create awkward situations, that have people saying “what the fuck is there problem”.
